Initiative to make the public sector more attractive to developers launched
Government plans to drag the construction industry into the 21st century could help cut through onerous procurement rules and make the public sector more attractive to work with.
The Cabinet Office published the government’s construction strategy last week, which sets out its ambitions for modernising the practice. One proposal is to establish forms of procurement to encourage firms in the supply chain to work more closely together.
The aim is to help the public sector cut 20% from its building costs by 2015. The strategy contains some significant policy announcements that could help private sector companies that work with the public sector.
The main one is to publish details of upcoming government building work. The proposal is to make details of the government’s two-year pipeline of work available on a quarterly basis.
The plan has been welcomed by those who work in the public sector because it should give developers, contractors and consultants greater clarity over business opportunities.
